DESIGN PROCESS - Phase 2 Part 1

                                        MALNUTRITION IN JHABUA DISTRICT

What are the various factors causing malnutrition in infants in Jhabua?

The Brain mapping is as follows -

The main occupation in Jhabua is agriculture which is entirely dependent on rainfall.
Jhabua being a drought prone area, the lack of rainfall in the district causes crops to fail and thus leaves the people in huge trouble.
Another problem is the lack of fertile soil due to which the people fail to perform farming activities. Both of these lead to the people borrowing money from moneylenders to satisfy their basic needs which leads to debt and malnutrition.
Another factor that causes malnutrition in Jhabua district is that due to lack of fertile land and thus lack of jobs, the people migrate to places like Gujarat and Rajasthan. The Ration Cards that they use in Jhabua does not work in these states, hence forcing them to go without food for long periods of time.

A coping mechanism of the tribals against malnutrition.

The tribals living in areas close to the pond collect wild Samai Grass and dry the grains in the grass to make flour - used to make 'rotis'.
The samai grass has a property of extinguishing the burning sensation caused by hunger.
The consumption of this grass leads to life threatening diseases and is a major cause of infant mortality.
