DESIGN PROCESS
As a part of this course we were asked to select a problem that interests us and work to create a process of solving it. Since healthcare is a major concern today i chose healthcare as a broad topic and came up with the problem statement.
PROBLEM STATEMENT - To reduce the High Infant Mortality Rate in Jhabua District of Madhya Pradesh due to malnutrition and lack of potable drinking water.

PROBLEM STATEMENT - To reduce the High Infant Mortality Rate in Jhabua District of Madhya Pradesh due to malnutrition and lack of potable drinking water.
The Process of forming the problem statement -
- First I chose Healthcare as a general broad topic.
- Then I chose Rural Healthcare as a topic and brain mapped further.

- Since High Mortality was a major problem in Rural Healthcare, I chose High Mortality and further divided it into individual reasons.
- Infant Mortality in rural areas is the highest hence I chose infant mortality as my main problem.
- Inorder to ensure geo-specificity, I researched on the condition of infant mortality across various states in India and found that Jhabua District of Madhya Pradesh had the Highest Infant Mortality Rate.
What is so different about Jhabua District and where exactly is it located?
- Jhabua District lies in the western part of Madhya Pradesh. The district is divided into five tehsils and six community development blocks.
- The district is highly drought prone and degraded waste lands are in large numbers. There are a few patches of fertile land. Agriculture is the main occupation of the people here and is totally depended on rain water.
- Jhabua is predominantly an Adivasi district and suffers from high rates of illiteracy and poverty. Almost half the population lives below the poverty line. With a literacy rate of 36.9% Jhabua district has the lowest literacy rate in the state of Madhya Pradesh. The Bhil and Bhilala tribes inhabit the interior of the district.
- The district is quite well known for its handicrafts. The woman make lovely ethnic items including bamboo products, dolls and beaded jewellery.
Why does Jhabua District have a High Infant Mortality Rate?

After Brain mapping the various reasons of High Infant Mortality in Jhabua, I came to the conclusion that malnutrition and lack of potable drinking water are the main reasons for the high infant mortality rate in Jhabua District.
Infant mortality due to Malnutrition accounts for 55% where as the deaths caused by lack of potable drinking water is too large to even comprehend.
