DESIGN PROCESS - Phase 3

PROBLEMS AND THEIR INDIVIDUAL SOLUTIONS.

After identifying the various problems causing malnutrition in Jhabua District, I tried to come up with a few individual solutions for the problems.  The brain mapping is as follows.

1) FAILING OF AGRICULTURE AS THE MAIN  OCCUPATION

- Agriculture being the main occupation in Jhabua and it being solely dependent on rainfall leaves the people of Jhabua district jobless when there is lack of rainfall and the crops fail.

- This situation can be controlled if the people have other job opportunities.

e.g - 1)Promoting their local Handicrafts, handmade Dolls and Home décor articles.

The tribals of Jhabua have mastered the art of Doll Making and are famous for what is  locally known as the "Adivasi Gudiya Hastashilp".
If their talent and skills are promoted, they can earn their livelihood with the help of their craftsmenship. In this way they wont have to migrate or borrow money from money lenders.

e.g- 2) Encouraging and promoting their knowledge in traditional medical treatment with herbs.

Some knowledge of the ancient Indian medicine and medicinal herbs has descended through the generations and survived through times among the tribal communities in India.
The tribal medicinemen of Jhabua, called Barwas posses the knowledge of traditional treatment to diseases and ailments like leprosy, jaundice, diabetes, malaria etc.
The plants that are required for such treatment are grown by them on a small scale in their geographical area.

If the government encourages the growth of these trees or herbs on a large scale and if this knowledge of the tribals is promoted, the doctors, scientists and the Barwas can work together to create natural cure for most diseases. This will also urge people to learn more about this and thus will create jobs and reasonable income.

2) SHORTAGE OF WATER

Lack of rainfall and lack of potable drinking water is a major problem in Jhabua .
lack of rainfall causes soil erosion and drought thus causing depletion of groundwater.
Methods such as rainwater harvesting, irrigation, ways to retain soil moisture and improving fertility of soil are some solutions.

Linking this point to my second problem i.e Lack of Potable Drinking Water due to contamination.

A  few solutions to prevent infant mortality due to fluoride contaminated water,
- Spreading awareness among the people about fluorosis.
- Daily Checkups and Treatment of water provided by the government.
- Creating another source of safe drinking water.
